The Mississippi Queen steamboat makes its first stop of the season at the Cape Girardeau riverfront, after winning the Great Mississippi Steamboat Race which ended in St. Louis yesterday; the Delta Queen will stop here Saturday.

1964

City Building Inspector Harry B. Sachse has refused to issue a building permit for the construction of a steel building on the Central High School campus; he explained that the proposed construction was in violation of the city fire code; the building was to house the auto mechanics shop.

Two California women -- Mrs. James Schuette and Mrs. Ray Trindle -- are injured in a forced landing 31 miles northwest of Cape Girardeau, ending their participation in the Powder Puff Derby, national women's cross-country air race, which started yesterday; the two land their single-engine Piper PA-24 airplane on the Lester Miller farm just south of Patton, Missouri, after running out of fuel; the plane tips over on its nose after coming to a stop in a field; Schuette suffers a fractured wrist and Trindle a broken ankle.

1939

Cape Girardeau is in the clutches of a famine: A scarcity of the mill tax tokens the state expects every person who buys anything to pay over; several merchants report they are practically out of the metal discs, and the two banks have none on hand.

The foundation for the new addition to the International Shoe factory at Jackson has been completed, and the erection of the structural steel has begun; Penzel Construction Co. has the contract for the work.

1914

The Rev. James A. Murtaugh, treasurer of St. Vincent's College and one of Cape Girardeau's live wires, has gone to Ottawa, Illinois, to spend a few weeks vacation; Hhe hasn't been in very robust health lately.

An Independence Day service is held in the evening at First Baptist Church, with the pastor, F.Y. Campbell, delivering a discourse on "The Essential Patriotism."
