Gov. Joseph P. Teasdale has a comfortable lead over James I. Spainhower for the Democratic nomination of governor, and Christopher S. Bond is way out front of William C. Phelps for the Republican nomination, a Missourian survey shows.

Repair crews for Missouri Utilities Co. finish restoration of power to customers here at about 2 a.m. following severe thunderstorms Wednesday that left 7,000 customers without power in Cape Girardeau alone.

50 years ago: July 5, 1955

A large crowd jammed Arena Park yesterday for the American Legion's annual Fourth of July picnic, the major attraction on a holiday that was marked by few accidents, and none of them of major consequence, in or near Cape Girardeau.

Wiley Macke of Pocahontas, an auto mechanic who has driven to and from Cape Girardeau for almost 16 years, made his final run Friday; today he begins working in his home town with the Pocahontas Auto Co., operated by Swan Bros.

75 years ago: July 5, 1930

Dr. Theodore F. Frazier, 86, one of the oldest and most widely known physicians in the district, dies from infirmities of age at his home at Commerce, Mo., where he had resided for 50 years; Frazier was born in Bowling Green, Ky., but spent the greatest part of his life in Missouri; he is survived by his widow and son, T.R. Frazier of Fulton, Mo.

The temperature climbs to 94 degrees in the afternoon as another heat wave threatens to fasten its grip on Cape Girardeau and vicinity.

100 years ago: July 5, 1905

D.A. Glenn returned from St. Louis, yesterday where he attended a meeting of the streetcar company; at the meeting, contracts were let for the building and equipping of an electric streetcar system in Cape Girardeau, four miles of which are to be finished by Sept. 15; Fulton Iron Works will furnish the immense Corlis engine, the O'Brien Boiler Works will supply the boilers and steam-making apparatus, the Westinghouse company will furnish all the electrical apparatus, the poles, wire, etc., and the American Car Co. will furnish the cars.

The Phillips Lumber and Fuel Co. is a new organization that will conduct a retail lumber and coal business on a large scale in Cape Girardeau; officers of the company are J.W. Phillips, president; J.H. Himmelberger, vice president, and August Vogelsang, secretary.
