The congregation of Westminster Presbyterian Church will conduct a 24-hour prayer vigil for rain; the event will be held at the church, beginning at 9 p.m. tomorrow.

Up to 90 percent of area farmers may not have enough hay available to carry their livestock through the winter due to grazing pastures being harmed by the drought of 1988; with no way to feed their animals, many farmers are wanting to sell heifers and cows.

1963

The board of trustees of Pocahontas has called a meeting for July 10 to discuss and vote on buying firefighting equipment for the town; a residence was destroyed and a store severely damaged by a blaze May 11; firefighters from Jackson and Frohna had to be called to control the fire.

Funeral services are held in the morning for Frank Marion Finney, 74, a prominent druggist in Cape Girardeau who died Monday; Finney, the son of Dr. and Mrs. J.M. Finney, had been associated with the Finney Drug Store here for more than 50 years, working first with his father and most recently with his nephew, Jack Finney.

In a campaign by the Ministerial Alliance, members of 15 Cape Girardeau churches hear sermons on the topic "Keep America Out of War;" in most cases, the sermons are delivered by the pastors.

The Rev. F.H. Melzer, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, leaves after the morning worship service for his annual vacation; he will be gone three Sundays; during his absence, services will be in charge of the student pastor, the Rev. Martin Koehneke.

1913

The first good soaking rain Cape Girardeau has enjoyed in more than two months visited the city yesterday afternoon; the storm came up quickly, a tremendous downpour immediately covering the city that continued for more than an hour.

Vogelsang Bros. have removed their offices from the First National Bank building to their shop at 128 S. Frederick St.
