With most of the exterior repair work completed at Old St. Vincent's, restoration of the interior can begin; Ted Wofford, a liturgical architect from the firm of Murphy, Downsey, Wofford and Richman of St. Louis, has presented the restoration committee with a set of sketches showing how the building can be restored to much of its original appearance.
Trinity Lutheran Church observes the birthday of the country with special music, a special order of service and a Fourth of July sermon delivered by the pastor, the Rev. David V. Dissen.
50 years ago: July 3, 1958
An application by Trans-Texas Airways to provide airline service through Cape Girardeau at the municipal airport has been filed with the Civil Aeronautics Board; the airways has asked to provide four flights daily, two north and two south.
Meyer-Albert Grocer Co., established in 1857, this week became the third old-line Cape Girardeau business firm in less than a year to close it doors; it followed in the steps of Bartels Mercantile Co. and the Excelsior Furniture Co.
75 years ago: July 3, 1933
Yesterday was the hottest day in Cape Girardeau this season; the mercury climbed to 102 degrees, one degree above the previous official high mark; the official reading at Jackson was 105 degrees.
A milk depot to furnish milk to needy and undernourished children of Cape Girardeau is opened by the Salvation Army; Capt. Ernest R. Orchard gives assistance to five families immediately upon opening the depot; three milk companies -- Sunny Hill Dairy, Mid-West Dairy Products and I. Ben Miller Dairy -- are donating 75 quarts of milk per day to the effort.
100 years ago: July 3, 1908
The Rev. B.H. Whiston, who has acted in the capacity of provisional pastor of the Christian Church in Cape Girardeau for the past five months, has asked the church board to be relieved from further service; his resignation was accepted, and the church is now without a pastor.
The well-known C.E. Kage livery stable on lower Broadway changes ownership, Kage selling it to Will Gockel and J.A. Vogel of Pocahontas.
