Voters in Jackson School District will go to the polls in a special election Tuesday to decide the fate of a $1.5 million bond issue for construction of classroom additions and expansion of the high school gymnasium; school officials say the improvements are needed to alleviate overcrowding.

Cape Girardeau city manager Gary A. Eide hopes to have selected a new police chief by about Sept. 1, the current chief -- Henry A. Gerecke -- having stated he would like to leave the post by the end of that month; 90 to 100 individuals have applied for the chief's job.

50 years ago: July 29, 1956

A refugee family from the Russian zone in Germany arrived this week to take up residence near Old Appleton; they are Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Menzel and daughter, Rose Marie; at present, they are making their home with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hoppe of near Arnsberg.

The main body of the 2,000 men of the 140th Infantry Regiment of the Missouri National Guard entrain from five points in Southeast Missouri for Camp Riley in Minnesota, where they will undergo two weeks of military training.

75 years ago: July 29, 1931

County Judge Norbert Sewing and W.T. Webb, right-of-way engineer for the county highway department, return to Daisy to resume negotiations with property owners regarding settlement for right of way for the proposed farm-to-market road from Millersville to Daisy; the pair also spent yesterday in that community talking with property owners.

Effective next week, the steamer Cape Girardeau will make only one trip to Cape Girardeau from St. Louis weekly, but will include in that trip a special excursion trip to Cairo, Ill.

100 years ago: July 29, 1906

The Rev. Theodore Ludwig has charge of the evening service at the courthouse lawn; the choir of the German Methodist Church, of which Ludwig is pastor, is in charge of the music.

Capt. R.B. Andrews, Lt. Juden, Sgt. Edward Blumer and Pvt. Cross, make a trip to Scott County in search of a rifle range for Company K, Missouri National Guard; an ideal range is found on Peter Hoeller's farm, about five miles south of Cape Girardeau.
