CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Even before Columbia Sportswear begins moving into its new 50,000-square-foot production plant next week, plans have been announced for doubling the size of the building in about a year; the building is in Chaffee's Industrial Park on north Highway 77.

Cape Girardeau City Council members generally voice support for the Vision 2000 strategic plan for the community and will consider approving a resolution Monday to formally support the extensive plan; the comments come at the conclusion of a study session, at which leaders of the Vision 2000 Committee outline some of the key strategies for the plan.

Immanuel Lutheran Church near Jackson has a new pastor and a new parsonage; the Rev. George A. Schrader was inducted as pastor July 7 by the Rev. Paul W. Ludwig of Gordonville; the same day the parsonage was dedicated.

Bill Kuster, Navy Science Cruiser representing the Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair, departs on an eight-day, science-oriented adventure at Charleston, S.C.

Thirteen parcels of real estate -- city, town and farm property -- are sold for $47,576 in the first two hours of auctioning of the Sturdivant Bank real estate at Courthouse Park; about 1,000 people crowd into the park for the sale; another 54 parcels are still to be sold.

Construction work on the community center and park west of the city continues to progress satisfactorily; pouring of concrete for the inside bleachers on the east side of the building has been completed, and the east side main girder is being installed as one of the bases for the huge arched roof.

The president of the T.J. Moss Tie Co., in the company of Allen Hinchey, secretary of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club, selects ground for a central tie distribution point here; the company will maintain a crew of 15 or 20 men at this place.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- What was said to have been the heaviest train ever pulled into Chaffee was brought in Thursday from Memphis, Tenn.; the drag contained 93 cars, and the tonnage of the load was 3,700; the trip took two days.
