25 years ago: July 28, 1983

Paving continues on sections of four streets in the south part of Cape Girardeau; Lappe Cement Finishing Inc., of Perryville, Mo., is the contractor on the project, which involves the paving of sections of Benton, College, Maple and Walnut streets.

Preparations are being made for the annual Jackson Homecomers; this year's event will feature much the same format as the previous few years, including talent shows every night except Wednesday, when the Homecomers queen is crowned.

50 years ago: July 28, 1958

Although bids are to be received Thursday in Jefferson City for resurfacing and widening U.S. 61 between Cape Girardeau and Jackson, the work will have no effect on the schedule of construction for the four-lane interstate highway from St. Louis to Memphis, Tenn.; no construction work is planned for the interstate in the fiscal year, which began July 1.

Showing a drop of nearly 22 inches over the weekend, the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau is at 32.1 feet.

75 years ago: July 28, 1933

Cape Girardeau retail merchants last night unanimously adopted the proposed shorter-hour and better-pay proposal in the national administration's recovery plan, agreed upon uniform closing hours and asked that a telegram be sent President Roosevelt advising him of their participation in the plan.

OLD APPLETON, Mo. — A shrill whistle proclaiming the news, the Appleton Brewery & Ice Co. yesterday received a federal permit for the manufacture of beer; the news passed from person to person, and within a few minutes everyone knew Appleton beer would be turned out again.

100 years ago: July 28, 1908

Ground was broken yesterday for the foundation of The Daily Republican newspaper's new home in the 200 block of Broadway; Jerome Legg, who designed Academic Hall, is the architect for the new building, and Edward Regenhardt is the contractor.

Hattie Cawthon, accompanied by Marion Marton, goes to Ste. Genevieve, Mo., for a visit with friends: Cawthon has been attending the Normal School and is one of Kennett, Mo.'s, most popular teachers.
