There's a housing shortage in Cape Girardeau; Southeast Missouri State University officials say many entering students wishing to live in residence halls on campus have found them filled to capacity with a waiting list.

While most Girardeans interviewed by The Missourian say President Ronald Reagan is on the right track with his budget cuts, some feel his tax-cut plan is weighted too heavily toward the upper income brackets.

The Osteopathic Hospital Building Campaign has exceeded its $200,000 goal by nearly $5,000 according to a preliminary tabulation made this morning at campaign headquarters; leaders of the drive predict more contributions may swell the total considerably.

BENTON, Mo. -- Contract for construction of a new high school to serve the R-4 school district has been awarded to the Vernon Higbee Construction Co. of Jackson; the new building will be built on Highway 55 southeast of Benton.

75 years ago: July 28, 1931

Girardeans will pay $83,658.35 in taxes on 1931 city real estate and personal property assessments, according to City Clerk W.C. Kaempfer and City Assessor Louis Steinhoff, who have just completed the 1931 city tax books; this tax will be paid on an assessed valuation of $11,304,450.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Edward L. Drum, city commissioners Phillip Steck and Louis Wittmor, and fire chief George D. French returned yesterday from St. Louis, where they attended a demonstration of American-LaFrance fire equipment; since the first of the year, purchase of new equipment, including a new fire truck, has been discussed from time to time by the city council, but no definite action has been taken.

100 years ago: July 28, 1906

Mrs. J.J. Young, an experienced dress maker and fitter, recently of St. Louis, has located at 514 Broadway, where she is prepared to do any kind of millinery work in the latest and most artistic manner.

Professor B.A. Thaxter returns from Portland, Ore.; however, he will leave again for that place next week, having accepted employment at the preparatory college there.
