First Federal of Southeast Missouri and Colonial Federal Savings announce plans to merge; once approved by the Federal Home Loan Bank system and the FSLIC, the merged entity will do business as First Colonial Federal.

An effort is underway to prevent the local showing of "The Last Temptation of Christ," the Martin Scorsese film that has triggered national criticism from Christian groups; First Assembly of God in Cape Girardeau is making plans to circulate petitions against the movie's showing here.

1963

For the first time since last fall, the Cape Girardeau traffic bridge across the Mississippi River is open to two-way traffic; all pavement has been laid, and the inspection has been completed; all that remains are minor cleanup operations, which shouldn't interfere with traffic.

Thomas M. Cotner and Ernest Lee Norman, song writers and recording artists of Cape Girardeau, have received word that their original ballad, "Trail of Tears," has been selected as the theme song for Chief Seattle Days, a three-day celebration Aug. 2-4 at Suquamish, Wash.

1938

Most of the arrangements have been made for opening a private airport in the vicinity of Cape Girardeau, although the details won't be announced for several days; the port will be only a few minute's drive from Cape Girardeau.

Mrs. N.J. Hutson of Cape Girardeau has been informed that Charles Lynn has been chosen as the name for a son born to her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn J. Hutson, of Eldorado, Kan.; the child, born Saturday, is the second in the family; he has a 3-year-old sister, Helen Estelle.

The Jungle Jiants, that bunch of monster country boys, come to town and trounce the Capahas easily, 10-3; aside from the usual champion hay pitchers, the Jiants have young Averbeck on the mound; he has a drop ball that makes the Capaha batsmen dislocate their necks in trying to reach.

Dr. Effie A. Close, osteopath, returned yesterday from a month's vacation and from the larger cities, where she has been investigating appliances for electric baths and arranging for the manufacture of her new invention.
