All-day services are held at New Faith Tabernacle Church; dinner is served at noon, and the Billy Stein Gospel Chorus appears at a community sing in the afternoon.

Scott City Furniture is moving its operation; Brad and Nancy Duschell have acquired a building at 3301 William St., in Cape Girardeau and will relocate their furniture store there after 12 years at the Scott City location.

50 years ago: July 27, 1961

Owners and operators of businesses along U.S. 61 were told yesterday the State Highway Department expects to procure necessary right of way this fiscal year but cannot with certainty say when construction will start on an added two lanes of pavement on the busy through-town thoroughfare.

The riverboat River Queen -- originally the Cape Girardeau -- was purchased for $49,100 at a federal auction at New Orleans yesterday by Arthur L. Krato, who plans to have it towed to Hannibal, Mo.

75 years ago: July 27, 1936

Lost overnight in the woods along Little Whitewater Creek, Walley, the 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Ogle of Cape Girardeau, was found early yesterday morning after a veritable army of men had searched for him over more than 20 square miles of rough land; he is safe at home, having slept in a hollow tree trunk, his dog Snapper nearby.

The PWA tentatively at least is holding up payment of $3,174.58, a part of the grant of about $56,000 on the West End sanitary sewer project since the Missouri State Board of Health hasn't given approval of the sewer system.

100 years ago: July 27, 1911

A runaway engine at the Union Mill and Lumber Co. plant in the far west end of Cape Girardeau drives at such speed that the flywheel breaks into several large pieces that fly off into space, one or two pieces wrecking the west end of the mill; the main shaft, which runs the full length of the building and furnishes the power for dozens of big planing machines, is bent into many directions, and pulleys and belts are twisted into all shapes.

The Hoxie train, which leaves here at 5:15 a.m., is derailed a few minutes after 7 at Cliff Switch, between Delta and Advance, Mo.
