25 years ago: July 27, 1985

Doctors' Park, Cape Girardeau's medical complex in the west end, continues to grow; four new buildings were recently completed; all but one are already occupied.

Construction has begun on the new Jackson Coca-Cola Bottling Co. facility at the Jackson Industrial Park; the building will be on an eight-acre tract in the Seabaugh section of the park, just off Route PP; the old Coca-Cola plant in Jackson was sold to the county in May for conversion into a new county administration building.

50 years ago: July 27, 1960

Despite the fact their candidate will be in a hospital during the campaign, American Legion supporters of Lory Stahly will continue their drive to elect him state commander at the convention in Joplin, Mo., this weekend; Stahly suffered a compound fracture of the left leg in a fall while on an outing with his family Sunday.

The first black youths in the Southeast Missouri Council to receive the high rank of Eagle Scout are Benjamin Blair, Ronald E. Coursey and James Hamber of Troop 122 at Poplar Bluff, Mo.

75 years ago: July 27, 1935

Fire, originating from heat generated by a flat tire, destroys a Chevrolet truck and its cargo of shotgun shells and clay pigeons, such as are used in trap shooting, on U.S. 61 seven miles west of Cape Girardeau; the truck is nearly blown to pieces by the explosion of the cargo of ammunition.

Elam Vangilder will leave tomorrow for Denver, where he will be a member of the pitching staff of the United Fuel team from Kansas City in the "Little World Series," which opens there Thursday.

100 years ago: July 27, 1910

The various real estate agents of Cape Girardeau report a heavy demand for residence properties, many letters being received from parties desiring to move their families here in time for the next term of the Normal School.

The Stein & Lance flour mill on Broadway has a big business in the morning, handling new wheat brought in by farmers from the Cape Girardeau area; wheat wagons are so thick on Broadway that the street is nearly blocked.
