Grace United Methodist Church presents a program on "The Gospel in Art" during the evening service; the Rev. Howard W. Ellis, artist and minister, speaks on the subject, "A Portrait of Jesus," drawing the picture as he preaches.
A dry Cape Girardeau area received some relief from the overall July drought during the weekend, when more than an inch of rain fell here; according to the Federal Aviation Agency office at the municipal airport, there was 0.60 of an inch of rain at the airport yesterday and an even half-inch today.
Yesterday was the hottest day of the year in Cape Girardeau with a high of 97 degrees recorded at State College; more of the same is in sight, as the forecast for Southeast Missouri is fair and hot today and tomorrow.
Plans for the Jaycee-sponsored motorboat races to be held in the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau Aug. 14 are nearing completion, says Pete Summers, chairman of the race committee; approximately 250 drivers, some of whom are world record holders, are expected to compete in the races, sanctioned by the National Outboard Association.
The Rev. George Hilpert, pastor of the Lutheran Church in Illmo, preaches the sermon at Trinity Lutheran Church; the pastor, the Rev. F.H. Melzer, is away on vacation; during his absence pastors from neighboring churches are filling the pulpit.
Adequate and immediate compensation for owners of property whose land is being taken under provisions of the federal government's plan of control of the Mississippi River was promised by members of the congressional flood-control committee, as they closed their two-week tour of the Mississippi valley basin with a meeting at Cape Girardeau last night.
The city council convenes in the morning to meet Granberry Jackson, the Memphis, Tenn., engineer, whose plans for a city sewer system were adopted by the council some time ago.
The regents of the Normal School let the contract for grading the campus to William Woods, the well-known contractor; architect J.B. Legg is here to direct the work and when completed the surroundings of the magnificent buildings will be beautiful; work is also progressing on the engine house, and it will be finished soon.
