The city of Scott City has "declared war" on an attempt by the Cape Girardeau City Council to annex a strip of land along Interstate 55 from the Scott-Cape Girardeau county line southward to near the Scott City city limits at Ramsey Creek; Scott City officials plan to hold a public meeting Aug. 8 to explain the situation to citizens and to formulate plans to oppose the annexation.

Two funnel clouds were spotted over the southern part of Cape Girardeau County yesterday evening, but did not touch down; thunderstorms caused minor damage and some power outages in the area.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A life blackened by violence and murder ends in the gas chamber at the state death house; Sammy Aire Tucker, who 28 months ago shot and mortally wounded Cape Girardeau police officer Donald H. Crittendon, goes to his death without struggle; Tucker was 28 years old.

Municipal government in Cape Girardeau officially becomes a million-dollar operation, when the city council adopts the city budget for the current fiscal year; the budget calls for expenditures of $1,074,689.14 in the year ending June 30; projected income for the 12 months is $1,098,155.18.

Cape Township Special Road District is making plans to apply to the WPA for a grant to develop and beautify Highway 61 from Cape Girardeau to Jackson; the WPA is expected to provide about 75 percent of the cost of the project.

John Noyes, landscape architect of St. Louis, and his son, John Jr., are in Cape Girardeau to confer with Dr. W.W. Parker, president of the Teachers College, relative to a landscaping plan for the college campus.

1913

Should the recommendations of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club be carried out, the city soon will ask its citizens to approve a bond issue to secure the money needed to transform city-owned vacant lots into municipal parks and to buy other property that also would be converted into parks.

J.W. Gratian, the man who built and installed the fine big pipe organ at Centenary Methodist Church, is in town to check the instrument's condition; he will give a concert this evening.
