About 30 Cape Girardeau west end businessmen, whose businesses are located in or near the flood plain on Kingshighway at William Street, appeared before the Cape Girardeau County Board of Equalization at Jackson yesterday to protest the appraisal of their property; a representative of the owners stated his clients believe the city and county should exempt them from all property taxes due to the severity of the flooding in their area.

Dr. Charles E. Sharp, a professor of history and the 1984-1985 Alumni Association Faculty Merit Award winner, will be speaker for summer commencement exercises at Southeast Missouri State University Aug. 9.

James A. Cochrane, a Cape Girardeau lawyer, scored a hole-in-one Saturday on the Country Club course, when he used a 4-iron on hole No. 7, which is 180 yards, to accomplish his feat; with him were Clyde McDonald, Fred Ricketts and Jan Chick.

BLOOMFIELD, Mo. -- Two armed men, one wearing a mask, tie up the night watchman and make away with between $10,000 and $11,000 worth of silverware from the Leo Fisher home during the night; the house is on the large, stately Fisher plantation, five miles north of Parma, Mo.

Excavation of earth for the basement of the new dwelling at Normal Avenue and West End Boulevard for Dr. and Mrs. M.H. Shelby is a difficult task; most of the excavation is being made in solid white limestone; workers are blasting it out and piling up large mounds of stone.

Joe Delassus, sturdy catcher for the Moons in the Municipal League, who has been playing with the Union City, Tenn., club in the Kitty league for two weeks, was given his release; he returned to Cape Girardeau on Thursday.

100 years ago: July 26, 1910

Yesterday was the hottest day of the season, the thermometer at the Normal School showing 95 degrees from 2 to 5 p.m.; thermometers at other parts of the city registered even higher.

F.J. Fedder, the Hoxie line mail clerk, is to have the honor of building the first bungalow in Cape Girardeau; the city has lagged behind in this kind of residential construction; the home will be on South Pacific Street.
