Schools in this country might be better at teaching self-esteem than English, math and science, and students will ultimately suffer for it, political analyst tells group of high school students taking part in Missouri Freedom Forum at Show Me Center; Allan Brownfield, Washington, D.C., author and political analyst, says that despite billions of dollars U.S. spends on public education each year, students perform poorly in basic subjects compared to students in other countries; but they are being taught that mediocre achievement is acceptable, he says.

Drury of Bloomsdale will head list of 184 undergraduate students receiving degrees at summer commencement exercises for Southeast Missouri State University Saturday; she will graduate summa cum laude with grade point average of 3.984 of possible 4.0, receiving bachelor of science degree in medical technology.

Dale Gene Bell of Blodgett went to St. Louis yesterday to be sworn into Navy, Navy recruiting office in Cape Girardeau announces; he will be sent to San Diego to undergo recruit training; five others recruited here during past week are now in training at San Diego: Robert D. Allen of Sikeston, Jerry L. Hornback of Sikeston, Glenn Dye of Sikeston, Jimmy G. Lawrence of Gray Ridge and Eugene Farr of Essex.

Probationary policeman Harold White of Cape Girardeau has resigned from police force, according to Chief Irvin Richmond; White, who joined force Monday, quit because he didn't like the type of work.

75 years ago: July 26, 1927

Sinking of caisson for Pier No. 3 of traffic bridge across Mississippi River will be started Thursday; new mixing plant to replace one which sank with barge on Illinois shore week ago has been equipped and will be used to pour concrete into caisson as it is gradually moved toward bed of river.

Farmers who are members of jury for this term of Common Pleas Court will be given ample time to work in their fields during August, as all cases requiring their attention are postponed until latter part of month; jury, which was to report for duty on Aug. 8, won't report until Aug. 29.
