THEBES, Ill. -- One of the finest basketball players ever produced by Cape Girardeau Central High School dies in the morning, the result of a Monday automobile accident near here; Darla Pannier, 19, was a 1988 Central graduate; she had been named a high school basketball All American and played collegiate basketball last year at Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri.

The city council has appointed a special citizens committee to look into the economic feasibility of converting old St. Vincent's College to public use.

1964

Two dwellings were moved along Scott City's main street yesterday afternoon to new locations on the south side of the railroad tracks, after they were purchased by Orley Jackson; one of the houses had been occupied by the William Blattel family and the other by W.L. Arnold; they were moved from property acquired by Ray Bennett, who will build a filling station on the site.

It will be back to school for those convicted a second time for intoxication in City Police Court; Judge Vernon Auer says the school will be an option to paying a fine.

Judge W.A. Sander, as executor of the will of Mrs. Addie Hobbs, has executed an executor's deed to Mr. and Mrs. Lester C. Jones for the Hobbs farm of 213.70 acres, the consideration being $6,381.75; this is one of the oldest farms in the county; it is on Williams Creek and was settled by William Williams about 135 years ago; Old McKendree Chapel stands on this land.

Mayor Edward L. Drum and Harry L. Coffman, secretary of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, attend a hearing in St. Louis before Interstate Commerce Commissioner examiners on an application of the Frisco Railroad to establish a motor bus line operating from Cape Girardeau south into several district towns and Northeast Arkansas.

Mose Colyer, one of the hustling farmers on the east side of the river, was held up last night shortly after dark by three men; they started to take his money, but when Colyer offered them a drink of whiskey, the robbers let him off, and he continued home with his money safe in his pocket.

Grace Campbell leaves in the morning for Detroit and points in Canada, where she will spend the remainder of the summer.
