ST. LOUIS -- Although a two-mile stretch of the Mississippi River near Buffalo, Iowa, remains closed this week because of low water, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says no serious navigation problems have developed on the river between St. Louis and Cairo, Ill.

Vicki S. Nenninger, a sophomore from Leopold, Mo., has been appointed by Gov. John Ashcroft as the third student representative to the Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents.

The county court has appointed Hubert Young, a Gordonville automobile dealer, as the county supervisor of the surplus food program; if approved by the State Division of Welfare, Young will replace County Clerk Rusby C. Crites in the job Aug. 1.

Condemnation action to open the way for the completion of the North Main Street floodwall is filed against Linder Deimund, proprietor of the Deimund Sand Co.; the case will be heard in federal court at Cape Girardeau.

Cape Girardeau's mystery Civil War veteran, who toured Fort D quietly some weeks ago, has been identified; he is Fred Davis, 93, who lives in the Gravel Hill Church community, southeast of Oak Ridge.

Thirty-one hundred separate checks, representing payments to individual depositors of the closed Sturdivant Bank, are drawn and signed, ready for distribution at the bank's Main Street office Monday morning; common depositors will receive 25 cents on the dollar.

Last night's public meeting to discuss the textbook controversy, called by the four members of the school board who supported the contract with the American Book Co. to supply the district's textbooks, was a complete waste of time; after hearing a book company representative speak, the four board members avoided questions from the public by hurriedly adjourning and retreating from the hall.

Phil A. Hoch, the furniture man, is back from several weeks spent in Chicago and Grand Rapids, Mich., where he has been studying the new furniture styles and designs.
