The first footing for the new post office building to serve Cape Girardeau was poured yesterday; all structures have been removed and much of the grading has been finished on the spacious site at the northeast corner of Frederick and Bellevue streets.

Monetary benefits to Cape Girardeau from the state's gasoline tax rebate plan topped $92,000 during the second full year of its operation, a striking 20 percent increase in revenue over the first 12 months; the continuing windfall has provided the upholstery for the city's financial cushion, needed to finance major public works projects this year.

1939

Dr. Thomas Nedal, president of Drury College at Springfield, Missouri, is the guest speaker in the morning at Centenary Methodist Church; he is the fifth of the visiting ministers to speak at Centenary during the absence of the pastor, the Rev. Don E. Schooler, who is touring in Europe.

Bill Parker, a student at Teachers College, wins the championship of The Missourian's district tennis tournament; he wins the title in three straight sets from Dick Donnewald.

1914

In the first argument between the contractors, Vogelsang Brothers, and the architects, Feltz and Company, over construction of the big central public school building, the architects won out; the school board went on record as sustaining the architects, who had protested the use of steel, which did not meet specifications.

Louis Stein is prepared to leave tomorrow morning for Berkley, California, to join his family; having concluded his business with the burned-out Stein and Lance mill, Stein contemplates entering the brokerage business in San Francisco.
