1987

Southeast Missouri State University president Dr. Bill Stacy issues a memo to the board of regents asking for a task force to determine the future of the school's athletic program; the directive comes shortly after the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced it will expand from eight to 12 schools in the 1989-1990 school year.

The longtime contributions of a Southeast Missouri State University supporter are recognized with the naming of the school's advancement division building as "The Aleen Vogel Wehking Alumni Center."

1962

Freedom Forum students from Cape Girardeau and the district went from here by bus to Mexico, Mo., in 1962 to participate in the state-wide forum, the local group being sponsored by the Jaycees. Ten Cape Girardeau students, representing Central High, Campus and Notre Dame High schools, departed yesterday by bus with other district youths for Freedom Forum at Mexico, Mo.; the local group is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Jaycees.

The Cape County Civil Defense organization is making preliminary plans toward the formation of a rural volunteer fire department, after receiving authorization from the county court.

1937

A 25 percent payment to general depositors of the closed Sturdivant Bank, recommended by receiver Lyman A. Matthews, is approved by Circuit Judge Frank Kelly; payments to preferred creditors, ranging from 50 to 100 percent, will be made simultaneously.

Jackson city attorney E.A. Mason files a complaint in the court of Mayor James R. Bowman, who is also police judge, against a couple charged with camping in Sanford Park, contrary to a just-passed city ordinance; the couple, along with their children, have been unable to find housing in Jackson; a local representative of the Red Cross procured two tents and placed them in the park for the family.

The Cape Girardeau & Thebes Terminal Railroad is bringing in two cars of wheat daily for the Stein & Lance mills; this wheat has been gathered from the vicinity of Ancell, Mo., Kelso, Mo., and New Hamburg, Mo.

S.P. Siebert of Farmington, Mo., a young man who has been in the shoe trade there for nearly 13 years, has come to Cape Girardeau to open an exclusive shoe store on Main Street; he has rented the building opposite the First National Bank.
