25 years ago: July 23, 1985

Police are looking for a pair of armed robbers who held up the Happy Hollow Tavern at Oriole, north of Cape Girardeau, at 11:15 a.m.; Cape Girardeau police and county sheriff's deputies set up at least three roadblocks, one at the Mississippi River bridge here and others on roads leading into Cape Girardeau from the north.

A federally funded program for renovation of rental housing units on Cape Girardeau's south side has met with little interest; not a single housing rehabilitation project has been approved and none of the available $150,000 has been spent.

50 years ago: July 23, 1960

McCLURE, Ill. -- A large frame barn containing 1,500 bales of hay and straw and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Webb of McClure was destroyed by fire when struck by lightning during an electrical storm early Friday night; damage is estimated at more than $20,000.

Jerry O'Connell, pitcher for the Cape National loop club of the Little League, hurled a no-hitter Thursday night in the team's win against Caruthersville, Mo., 4-0.

75 years ago: July 23, 1935

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Orville Zimmerman, Democrat of Missouri, says he has received definite assurance of federal funds for the 30,000-acre Mingo swamp wild game sanctuary in Southeast Missouri; the sanctuary will be one of the largest in the country.

Burglars force an entrance to the Sugar Creek Creamery Co., 103 S. Sprigg St., early in the morning, blow the safe in the office, and escape with between $300 and $400 in cash and checks.

100 years ago: July 23, 1910

President I.R. Kelso of the Commercial Club announces Brooks, Van Bibber & Co. of Boston have signed contracts to begin getting the smelter plant ready for production in 30 days.

About 36 friends of Mrs. Linus Sanford of Jackson surprised her last evening, it being her 64th birthday; her ancestors were among the first settlers in Missouri; her great-grandfather was George S. Bollinger and her grandfather Joseph Frizzel.
