50 years ago: July 23, 1954

Several area school systems met this week to decide whether to integrate black pupils into public schools or to maintain separate schools for both white and black children; school boards in both Kennett and Clarkton followed Cape Girardeau and Sikeston's examples by voting to integrate districts.

New automatic type of telephone system goes into use in Missourian building; dial-type system allows not only usual service outside building, but also provides for system of communications between various departments of newspaper and Missourian Printing & Stationery Co.

75 years ago: July 23, 1929

Peoples Oil Co. announces opening for tire station in stucco building adjoining its large filling station at corner of Broadway and Pacific; place will be operated under name Peoples Oil Company Tire Department.

Contract for laying track of new Missouri Pacific Railroad into Cape Girardeau has been let to Belhorn, Bowers and Peters Inc. of St. Louis; work should begin next week.
