Pilot and passenger in twin-engine airplane are killed when plane crashes in south-central Pennsylvania; plane belonged to Motorcycle Stuff Inc., Jackson motorcycle wholesaler; company is owned by Jim Dodd of Cape Girardeau; authorities haven't identified two victims.

School superintendents and contract school bus operators in area say voluntary recall of some Navistar International school buses shouldn't affect them at this time; but spokesman for Navistar International headquarters in Chicago says it is possible recall may be expanded to included additional buses that are used in this area; Navistar is recalling 24,000 International school bus chassis to correct fuel tank defect that could lead to leaking in crash.

25 years ago: July 23, 1977

Direct radio link between Cape Girardeau Police Department and Alexander County Sheriff's Department has been proposed by Sheriff Donald J. Turner, and Police Chief Henry H. Gerecke says he is interested in idea; sheriff says direct link between departments would be beneficial in apprehending people fleeing across Mississippi River bridge here into either state.

Thirty-second Judicial Circuit Judge Stanley Grimm of Cape Girardeau is new president of Cape County Bar Association; other new officers are: Vice president, Paul Gilbert; secretary, Gerald Johnson, and treasurer, James McHaney.

50 years ago: July 23, 1952

Those living outside city, but who own property and work here, won't be permitted to vote in Cape Girardeau wards in primary election; Board of Registrars, meeting at Common Pleas Courthouse, votes 17 to 4 to remove registration cards of those known to have moved away, although they may retain their property within city and are continuing to be employed here.

In heated, two-hour meeting last night at American Legion Hall, Golden Troopers voted to a man to go to New York and enter national drum and bugle contest; Troopers, still rankling a bit from being ranked second at state contest last weekend, vowed to regain lowered prestige with coup at nationwide affair.

75 years ago: July 23, 1927

Young masked bandit, flourishing heavy revolver, holds up Frank Austin, proprietor of barbecue stand on South Sprigg Street, shortly after midnight; boy flees into darkness after securing about $5 in change.

Elmer A. Strom, son of Mrs. Katherine Strom of Cape Girardeau, has passed state bar examination, which he took in June; out 221 applicants who were examined, 133 passed; Strom has spent past two years as student in school of law at University of Missouri.
