Low water conditions on the Mississippi River have forced the steamboat Delta Queen to cancel its scheduled docking here on Monday; future visits by it and the Mississippi Queen will depend on river conditions.
About 100 workers were laid off at Lenco Inc. at Jackson yesterday; the majority of workers in the layoff were from the plastics division, according to a source at the company.
Fred M. Wilferth, who had resigned as principal of Central High School at the end of last school year, has decided to stay in that position; Wilferth had signed a contract to teach in the Jackson school system, but has been released from that contract by the Jackson School Board.
R.O. Hawkins, superintendent of the Jackson School District, says he doesn't know what will have to be done to handle sewage at the new junior high school this September until the city sewer line is completed and connected; despite assurances to Hawkins the sewer line would be ready when school opens Aug. 31, the Jackson City Council last night placed the line's completion in mid-September.
One water pump atop a concrete reservoir constructed in 1935 on Olive Street in the area across the track east of the Smelterville suburb is the only place where 200 or more families in that area can get city water; the water is furnished free by the city, and the pump is kept in almost constant use.
Under a new law, judges of the county court will be allowed mileage expense for each term of court; the fee allowed is 5 cents per mile.
While cleaning out a well on a small farm near the fairground Friday, L.F. Thomas struck his spade against a hard object at the depth of 5 feet; upon investigation, he found it was a 12-pound shell, which old Gen. John S. Marmaduke fired at him during the Civil War; Thomas, a member of Company A, Second Missouri Light Artillery, was stationed at Fort B on April 26, 1863, when Marmaduke fired on the town.
The financial affairs of the Glenn Mercantile Co., operating the Glenn Store on Main Street, were adjusted this week, all claims against the store being settled; D.A. Glenn announces he will now proceed with the store as in the past.
