The "Spirit of Southeast," Southeast Missouri Hospital's new Bell Long Ranger II air ambulance helicopter, paid a visit to Scott City yesterday to meet with police and emergency medical personnel there and the North Scott County Ambulance Service; the air ambulance service is scheduled to begin Aug. 3.

The Cape Girardeau Area Commerce and Growth Association, formed about a month ago, seeks to provide a regional approach to regional problems; about 26 business and civic leaders in the Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Chaffee, Mo., and Scott City area are participating in the association.

1962

Baptismal rites at Municipal Swimming Pool were conducted July 21, 1962, as part of the Jehovah's Witnesses convention. Among the participants were, from left, ministers and candidates, the Rev. David Kelly of West Plains, Mo., and Dennis McCubbins of Jerseyville, Ill., the Rev. Carl A. Herbold of Thayer, Mo., and Charles Farmer of Kennett, Mo., and the Rev. William M. Sanders of Hayti, Mo., and Miss Shirley Murphy of Walnut Ridge, Ark.

Assembled at the municipal swimming pool Friday, 1,129 Jehovah's Witnesses attending the Courageous Ministers District Assembly being held here watched a mass baptism of 52 new members of the denomination.

About 2,500 people -- employees and their families -- attended the annual International Shoe Co. employees' picnic yesterday afternoon in Capaha Park; Eddie and Vi Keys and their children provided the musical entertainment.

An extensive program of repair work has been started at the Teachers College with a view of completely modernizing the school; interiors of virtually all the buildings will be redecorated; the steps leading from Academic Hall south have been taken up and reset, and repairs are also being made to others.

The Jackson School Board has decided to inaugurate bus service for those boys and girls living in the northern part of the county who wish to attend the high school there next fall.

1912

At the public meeting at the courthouse, the actions of the majority faction of the school board are severely criticized and the actions of the representatives of the American Book Co. strongly condemned; the four school board members who voted for a list of textbooks unsupported by the district's superintendents and principals fail to attend the gathering, sending their lawyers to the meeting instead.

The National Guard boys from Company K of Cape Girardeau and Company F of Jackson have returned from the state encampment at Nevada, Mo.
