A major paving project is underway at Arena Park, where gravel parking areas in the vicinity of the Arena Building are being paved with asphalt; other off-street parking areas are being re-graveled.

Local baseball managers and picnic organizers are wondering if there is an Indian rain dancer loose in Cape Girardeau; in the last week, Cape Girardeau has received 6.05 inches of rain, although the surrounding area has had little precipitation.

The re-flooring project on the Mississippi River bridge here is expected to be substantially complete by the end of this week; the final phase of the effort -- the pouring of asphalt on the concrete and steel grid surface -- should begin Tuesday or Wednesday.

1938

An effort is being made in Cape Girardeau County to either interest a large brewing company in opening a plant at Old Appleton or in organizing a local brewery to take over the vacant property; when the old brewery was closed in June and moved away, few of the workers moved with it.

Walls are nearing completion and the roof of the new gymnasium at St. Vincent's College is now under construction; the roof is of a curved, self-supporting type that eliminates center posts.

1913

The special water and light committee, which has been working for nearly a year to prepare a report and an ordinance granting a water and light franchise, finally makes a preliminary report to the city council.

Considerable amount of time at the city council meeting is given over to protests of street improvements; R.B. Oliver and R.H. Huhn protest the improvement of North Sprigg Street with gravel and before water, gas and sewer pipes are laid; R.H. Schultz, representing the Cape Girardeau Northern Railroad, protests the plans for improving Merriwether Street between Aquamsi and Sprigg streets.
