The Cape Girardeau Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3838 has joined a growing list of not-for-profit groups in Cape Girardeau County that have appealed to the county board of equalization for resumption of their real estate tax exemption; the groups may be included on the county tax rolls following recently completed statewide reassessment, according to the Missouri Tax Commission.

The Army Reserve is coming to Cape Girardeau; the second detachment of the 21st General Hospital has relocated here from Marion, Ill.

50 years ago: July 19, 1960

Cape Girardeau police officer Don McNeely yesterday killed what is believed to be a cottonmouth snake in a tree in the yard of Mrs. David Rogers, 312 Independence St.; McNeely shot the reptile out of the tree and then used a hoe to dispatch it.

Boys returning to St. Vincent's College in the fall will be treated to entirely new accommodations in the shower and locker rooms; the rooms are being remodeled this summer with new showers, tile flooring, lights, ceiling, lockers, plumbing and even a barber shop room.

Beginning in August, The Southeast Missourian will include a comic section of 12 pages in its Saturday editions; all together there will be 19 strips included.

Fred Kurre has been awarded the contract to build the new studio at 427 Broadway for photographer H.L. Lueders; razing of the one-story brick structure housing Lueders' present studio will begin Monday.

100 years ago: July 19, 1910

If the Cape Girardeau City Council has its way, the Frisco Railroad will have to "fold up its tents" and fade away; all the members except two voted last night in favor of an ordinance that declared the Frisco's franchises forfeited and its occupancy of the streets to be a nuisance; the ordinance ask that the tracks be removed by Sept. 1.

A number of remonstrances have been received by the city government, stopping planned paving work on Frederick, Bellevue, Ellis and Independence streets.
