Cape Girardeau County has been denied federal matching funds to construct a fishing pier for the handicapped at the County Farm Park, an action that both surprises and angers County Court members.

The Scott City Council decides not to move a firetruck from the old Illmo fire station to Scott City's more centrally located fire station because of public opposition to the move.

50 years ago: July 18, 1958

In a preliminary meeting of a small group of property owners and others last night, it was decided to look into forming a drainage district which would embrace the Cape Girardeau portion of Cape LaCroix Creek and the Walker Creek and West Broadway areas within the city; the meeting, held at the home of L.R. Roper, was attended by George Kimbel, Jake Pollack, Eddie Erlbacher, George A. Penzel, Gale Froemsdorf, George Points, Ned Moore, Howard Metheny, Lehman Finch and Charles N. Harris.

Heavy rains overnight cause the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to revise its river forecast once more; the Mississippi is expected to reach 31.2 feet here Monday, but no crest is predicted.

75 years ago: July 18, 1933

Wilbur N. Stalcup, coach of athletics at Jackson High School last year, has been named to the coaching post at the Northwest State Teachers College in Maryville, Mo.

Virginia Lee Albert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee L. Albert of Cape Girar¿deau, has gone to Chicago to spend the week at the World's Fair as the guest of the Fox Theater Co.; she won a local theater personality contest and was chosen queen among eight community winners.

100 years ago: July 18, 1908

Postmaster E.W. Flentge will move the post office to its new quarters in the Himmelberger-Harrison Building tonight, and patrons will be able to call at the new place tomorrow for their mail; the move had been scheduled for August.

The Rev. Thomas J. Shaw of St. Mary's of the Barrens in Perryville, Mo., was in Cape Girardeau yesterday visiting the priests at St. Vincent's College and celebrating his 47th anniversary in the priesthood.
