There was a big, fat balance in Cape Girardeau's bank account when it ended its fiscal year June 30; in the general revenue fund, the sum on hand at year's end was $108,612.91; that's an increase of $4,818.84 over last year and a jump of $23,114.76 over fiscal 1958.

John Wittenborn, a standout football player for coach Kenny Knox and the State College Indians in the 1950s, will be returned for his third season with the San Francisco 49ers when the National Football League team opens practice next week at St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif.

75 years ago: July 16, 1935

The city of Cape Girardeau begins securing deeds for the right of way for the connection of North Main Street with Country Club and Cape Rock drives.

A group of 185 black youths and men arrive at Delta by rail to become workers at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp being completed four miles northwest of that town; the contingent was sent from Liberty, Mo., near Kansas City.

100 years ago: July 16, 1910

L.M. Bean of Jackson reports 4 1/4 inches of rain fell overnight, causing great damage to county crops; the water was within 8 inches of the high-water mark at Burfordville, the Whitewater River doing heavy damage.

Last night's cloudburst made Broadway a torrent in Cape Girardeau, carrying off bricks and timbers at the new Grissom building construction site at Spanish Street; fortunately the paving people completed their job on Broadway hill yesterday, or the work would have been torn up for fourth time.
