1964

Capaha Park lagoon is free of the vegetation that had covered much of its surface earlier in the year; chemicals had been applied to kill the algae growth and had succeeded in clearing part of the surface, but finally the water was scraped manually.

An election will be held in the Kage School District on July 21 to determine whether the residents there wish the district to be annexed to the Cape Girardeau School District; the Kage district, which has about 200 voters and more than 40 school-age children, is adjacent to Cape Girardeau on the west and northwest.

1939

A severe windstorm, accompanied by rainfall amounting to a half-inch and some lightning, sweeps Cape Girardeau and the district early in the day, temporarily disrupting electric power, telephone and telegraph communications and inflicting some damage; the latter is confined chiefly to trees and grain crops.

It is rumored that the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. is considering constructing a large building in the 700 block of Broadway, which would house a retail store of the "supermarket" type; the firm already has a store on the south side of that street.

1914

Nearly a thousand citizens attended the dress parade of the two National Guard regiments stationed at Camp Kiel, south of Cape Girardeau, yesterday evening; they saw a mighty fine exhibition of drilling and horsemanship by the officers.

Ferdinand Bisher of New Hamburg, Missouri, died July 6 at the age of 77 years; he leaves seven children, 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
