25 years ago: July 15, 1987

A citizens utility committee is recommending the city council "proceed with the process" for municipalization of the electric and water systems; the committee is advising against a city takeover of the gas system; all three utilities are owned and operated by Union Electric Co.

Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr. is appointed circuit court judge of the 32nd District, replacing Judge Stanley A. Grimm, who has been named to the Missouri Court of Appeals.

50 years ago: July 15, 1962

Three local Boy Scouts who have received scholarships from the Lions Club leave for Camp Philmont at Cimarron, N.M., for a two-week training course in Scouting leadership; making the trip are Martin Dubbs Jr., Kenneth Steinhoff and William C. Hardwick.

The Rev. Gary Ausbun succeeds the Rev. H.G. Earl as pastor of West Side Church of God; Ausbun is married and has two daughters.

75 years ago: July 15, 1937

John Boss is the busiest man in Cape Girardeau; all this week, which is being observed as "John Boss Week" at the Buckner-Ragsdale store, he has been shaking hands and answering scores of telephone calls from friends congratulating him on his milestone with the firm; he's rounding out 30 years of service at the store.

July remains a rainless month in Cape Girardeau as hot weather continues; there hasn't been sufficient rainfall here to register since June 30, when 41/100ths of an inch of rain fell; dry weather has aided wheat threshing, but other corps in the county are badly in need of moisture.

100 years ago: July 15, 1912

The third death of a prominent Cape Girardeau citizen in a week's time is recorded; following the death of Maj. W.W. Ward only a few days ago and the death of Harlan P. Peironnet only a few hours later came the death yesterday of Leon J. Albert in Ocean City, Md.; the deaths of the men remove three prominent figures of the town's financial and commercial circles and leave three vacancies in the directorate of the Southeast Missouri Trust Co. here.

The Crescent restaurant changed hands Saturday evening; Mr. Freeman bought out the interest of his partner, O.N. Yarbrough, in both the restaurant and in the Crescent pool hall; Yarbrough, in turn, has purchased the Broadway restaurant from Mrs. Kage.
