25 years ago: July 15, 1982

Most Cape Girardeau municipal employees find a little extra in their paychecks, about 6 percent extra; city manager Gary A. Eide and the various employee groups have reached an agreement on Fiscal Year 1982-1983 salary levels, which calls for an average 6 percent wage increase effective at the beginning of this month.

Approximately 1,400 Prince Hall Masons are in Cape Girardeau this week to conduct business for their state organization, including the possible formation of a new Shriners organization here, awarding of $10,000 in scholarships and discussion of a new credit union.

50 years ago: July 15, 1957

Clinton Haertling, 18, of Altenburg suffered a right leg fracture in a baseball game played yesterday there; he was attempting to slide into home plate when the leg was twisted and fractured; he is the son of Theodore Haertling.

M. Luther Hahs has been elected president of the newly organized St. Andrew Lutheran Congregation; 84 adults have become members of the new church and will be classed as charter members; the first official church meeting of the congregation is set for the first Sunday in October.

75 years ago: July 15, 1932

Lawana Fisher of Cape Girardeau, the only Missouri girl entered in the Fox Personality Contest at Centralia, Ill., yesterday won first place; the award of $250 will be presented to her at the local Fox Broadway Theater at a night show in the near future.

Fire of undetermined origin damages the upper story of a brick residence occupied by the John Weber family at 230 Good Hope St. in Cape Girardeau; the walls are scorched, and the plaster will have to be removed; damage is estimated at $500.

100 years ago: July 15, 1907

A change of ownership of the Planters Mill took place last week; the Potts are now out, and W.H. Coerver, Ben Hunze, Jacob Keller, John Schwab and J.F. Fuerth are in the directorate; the same kind of business will be maintained.

The Cape Girardeau City Council passes an ordinance calling for the construction of a new sewer system for the town and the awarding of a contract Aug. 19.
