25 years ago: July 13, 1985

Retiring Brig. Gen. Charles F. Blattner of Cape Girardeau receives the Legion of Merit medal during a ceremony at Jefferson Barracks, in which command of the Missouri National Guard's 35th Engineer Brigade passes to Brig. Gen. Waylen E. Jobe of Springfield, Mo.

It's more than a year before the statewide primary, and Democratic state auditor candidate Vincent T. Volpe is already on the campaign trail; Volpe is in Cape Girardeau attending the Cape County Democratic Committee picnic.

50 years ago: July 13, 1960

Promotion of two veteran National Guard officers to top positions in the First Battle Group, 140th Infantry, is announced; Narvol A. Randol has been promoted to the rank of colonel and appointed commander of the Battle Group to succeed Brig. Gen. Russell Boyt; Glenn Lampley was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and made deputy Battle Group commander.

Construction has been started on a bridge across William Creek on Highway 61, one of two to be erected by the Davidson-Scott and Wilson Bridge Co. of St. Louis.

75 years ago: July 13, 1935

Construction of the proposed South Main Street extension as a Federal Emergency Relief Administration project probably will be delayed another month; virtually all of the available street department equipment is being used on the Perry Avenue project, which must be finished before the other work can begin.

Ev Litton, star outfielder in the Municipal League and a student of Teachers College, has been signed to a contract by the Portageville (Mo.) Pirates of the Kitty League.

100 years ago: July 13, 1910

Henry Huhn, an old and esteemed resident of Cape Girardeau, dies in the morning at his residence on Washington Avenue, near the north end of Frederick Street; Huhn was 73 years, having been born in Frankenburg, Germany, in 1837; he was a shoemaker and tanner by trade, but later purchased and ran the Prescott House on Main Street until about four years ago.

George McBride yesterday closed a deal in which he purchased nearly 17 acres of land lying between the cement plant and the smelter plant in South Cape Girardeau.
