Firefighter Sam Welker was injured last night in an apartment house blaze; flames were shooting from the windows when firefighters arrived at the building at 601 North St.; Welker suffered a cut on one arm when a window air conditioner firefighters were moving fell on his arm.
Cape Girardeau employees will receive an average salary increase of 7 percent in the 1983-1984 fiscal year under terms of a new salary agreement, said city manager Gary A. Eide.

Herbert Riehn has accepted the position of deputy sheriff of Cape Girardeau County, and he and his wife will have charge of the county jail after July 15; deputy sheriff Gib Headrick is leaving the department, and Deputy James Baker of Cape Girardeau is resigning to take a position as a game agent.
The new bridge over Sloan's Creek, providing a access to the northeast section of Cape Girardeau, is dedicated at an afternoon ribbon-cutting ceremony; Col. Charles B. Schweizer, U.S. district engineer, describes the bridge as "a milestone in the progress of things in Cape Girardeau."
75 years ago: July 11, 1933
SIKESTON, Mo. -- Full operation at the Scott County Milling Co.'s Mill A in Sikeston will be possible by Thursday morning, says general manager Lyman R. Bowman; yesterday fire destroyed one of the company's big grain conditioning buildings here.
Acting to break a long-standing deadlock in the County Highway Commission, the County Court appoints two new members: J.M. Slagle of Whitewater and W.A. Bowers of Oak Ridge; the former succeeds C.A. Vandivort of Cape Girardeau, who resigned with one year of his four-year term to serve, while the latter succeeds L.A. Goodwin of Jackson, whose term expired.
100 years ago: July 11, 1908
Recently, a large number of the saloon keepers of Cape Girardeau perfected a local council of the state Liquor Dealers' Benevolent Association; other members were taken in until only one or two remain now without the fold.
Ferd Kraft reports that he is negotiating a deal with a party of St. Louis bakers for the sale of the Kraft bakery in Haarig; the new owners will operate the bakery as a wholesale concern.
