Missourians may be paying a little more for gasoline these days, but state's average of $1.03 for regular unleaded fuel is still well below national average of $1.11 per gallon; Cape Girardeau drivers looking for self-serve regular unleaded fuel are finding 99.9-cent a gallon gasoline at most stations in town.

Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan signs what he terms "landmark legislation" to reform state's welfare system and provide incentives for people to become self-sufficient.

Three Southeast Missouri State University administrators have been nominated as candidates for interim president of university: Dr. Bill W. Stacy, dean of graduate school; Dr. Milford O. Holt, dean of College of Education, and Dr. William Petrick, vice president for academic services.

Letter-writing campaign to have Cape Girardeau woman appointed to Southeast Missouri State University begins in morning with special-delivery letter from applicant herself, Mary Kasten, to Gov. Joseph P. Teasdale.

Nondenominational church, The Branch of the Lord, has purchased old South Side Baptist Church building on South Sprigg Street; pastor of new congregation is the Rev. R.C. Kiefer.

Annual summer outing of Walther Leagues in Cape Girardeau zone is held at Big Spring State Park; young people from zone join in special morning worship service at park, led by Andrew Weyermann, vicar at Trinity Lutheran Church; vespers are conducted by the Rev. W. Keisker of Jackson.

75 years ago: July 11, 1929

New route from Cape Girardeau to Chaffee, Oran and Blomeyer and other communities will be provided in near future by Missouri State Highway Commission in compliance with provisions for constructing 300 miles of traffic relief connecting roads in Missouri.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Crowd estimated at between 2,000 and 2,500 people attended Perry County's Cow Day yesterday, when more than 80 purebred Jersey heifers and bulls were distributed among boys' and girls' clubs of county.
