Ground is broken for new edifice for Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Church; 101-year-old church burned Nov. 26, 1993; new, 4,800-square-foot church will be attached to existing activity center.

John Starnes of Brentwood, Tenn., sings at First Assembly of God Church in evening; originally from Atlanta, Ga., Starnes has been singing gospel music full time more than 14 years.

25 years ago: July 10, 1979

Missouri Gov. Joseph P. Teasdale, speaking at municipal airport, calls members of state's legislature "extravagant" and "out of touch" with economic situation of state in justifying his vetoes of more than $111 million in state appropriations for next fiscal year; among cuts is money earmarked for construction of addition to Magill Hall of Science at Southeast Missouri State University.

Dr. Robert E. Leestamper lets Teasdale know that his appointments to Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents this year had cost Leestamper his job as president of university; Leestamper, who confronts governor after news conference at airport, asks Teasdale to find out more about situation.

50 years ago: July 10, 1954

Despite slowdown in past two weeks, dollar value of Cape Girardeau's building construction stands only $110,048 short of $2 million figure for the year, June records show.

Bonnie Huffman has been dead a week now, and searchers have been unable to find any trace of her missing personal articles, while investigators, working day and night in running down every available clue, have little left to work on.

75 years ago: July 10, 1929

Plans for milk cooling plant of Mid-Continent Dairy Products Co., to be built at Perryville, are delivered there by engineers for company; erection of structure will begin as soon as contract for structure has been let.

Cape Girardeau banks receive $18,440, first shipment of new federal paper currency; paper money arrives in denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10 and $20; new bills are 6 5/16 inches long and 2 11/16 inches wide, as compared to dimensions of 7 3/8 inches by 3 inches of old paper money.
