Douglas Wayne Thompson, who has twice been convicted of the murder of a Cape Girardeau auxiliary police officer in 1961 and has had both convictions overturned, is scheduled to go to trial once again; county Prosecuting Attorney Larry Ferrell filed new murder charges against Thompson yesterday in the death of Herbert L. Goss.
Cape Girardeau County administrative judges — who may soon be called commissioners — are disappointed in a bill they had supported; contrary to its intent, the bill does not expand a judge's term in office from two to four years.

Tracks of the Frisco Railroad will be moved this week to the east side of Water Street to enable the contractor for the Merriwether-Bellevue section of the floodwall to begin construction.

An ordinance, proposing to give the Missouri Utilities Co. a 20-year franchise to operate its water and electric power plants in Cape Girardeau and supply service to the city, will be submitted to voters as soon as it can be legally done, the city council decided yesterday.
Right of way clearing was started yesterday on the farm road sector from Whitewater toward Dutchtown by a contractor, Ralph E. Brown of Cape Girardeau; it is a farm-to-market project and, after the right of way has been cleared, culvert and bridge construction will begin.
100 years ago: June 9, 1908
R.W. Beall of Cape Girardeau offers himself as an Independence Day attraction; he challenges anyone between the weight of 118 and 125 pounds to a boxing exhibition at the big celebration being planned by the Knights of Columbus.
In the course of a few weeks, Cape Girardeau will be in the possession of probably the finest jail and jail building in Missouri; by the action of the council last night, $2,500 was set aside from the general fund to be applied to the construction of a modern jail building.
