25 years ago: June 9, 1983

By the narrowest of margins, Missouri voters approved a $600 million bond issue yesterday which Gov. Christopher Bond hails as the salvation of the state's economy; turnout in Cape Girardeau County was low for the vote, but the issue passed in the county.

One of Cape Girardeau's four fire stations was closed temporarily Monday when two of the department's 16 captains called in sick; because many of the remaining captains were either scheduled to take off Monday or were on vacation, chief Charles Mills decided to close one of the city's satellite fire stations, Fire Station Three, 429 Emerald St., for the day.

50 years ago: June 9, 1957

The cornerstone-laying ceremony is held in the afternoon for the new Immanuel Lutheran Church at New Wells, Mo., with the Rev. F.L. Mahnken, the pastor, in charge. The edifice will be built of mingled buff brick and Bedford stone trim, and located on the church grounds, at the north hillside.

The Sacrament of Confirmation is administered at St. Mary's Cathedral by Bishop Charles H. Helmsing, D.D.; about 150 children and adults are in the confirmation class.

75 years ago: June 9, 1932

If Girardeans continue to write checks as they have in the past, they will pay more than $50 per day to the government for the privilege of paying and being paid by use of check blanks, when the new 2-cent tax on checks goes into effect June 22.

Workers are installing a pipeline from a point on the North Sprigg Street road just south of Lila Drew Farm to the farms of Judge I.R. Kelso and W. Kielhofner to provide water service from the Missouri Utilities Co. plant.

100 years ago: June 9, 1907

Trinity Lutheran Church is the only Protestant church in Cape Girardeau to hold regular services; union services are held at the Lincoln McConnell tabernacle in the morning, with about 7,000 people attending.

The Cape Girardeau Capahas redeem themselves by giving the South Broadway Athletic Club of St. Louis a good drubbing, 7-3; the St. Louis team is composed of fine boys, and the game is one of the cleanest ever played here.
