The county court, in discussing the county sheriff's department, says it will consider holding former sheriff James J. Below responsible for damages prisoners have caused in the 1-year-old jail; the court has also decided against asking state highway patrol Sgt. Norman Copeland to assume the duties of sheriff through the end of the year because his patrol benefits might be in jeopardy should he take a temporary leave of absence.

J.G. Kies, 80, a former publisher and postmaster of Jackson, died last night at a Cape Girardeau hospital, where he had been a patient since May 26; Kies had suffered injuries that day when he walked into a truck near his Jackson home; Kies is survived by his wife, Frieda Heyde Kies; a daughter, four sisters and two brothers.

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Lester H. Frances of Lutesville, Mo., has been selected by the Bollinger County Court to serve as Civil Defense director of Bollinger County.

75 years ago: June 9, 1930

Burton Bus Line, owned by Tom Burton of Dexter, Mo., and operated between Cape Girardeau and Kennett, Mo., is sold to Southwestern Transportation Co., a subsidiary of the Cotton Belt Railroad Co.; the new owner will take possession about June 15.

Thieves broke a rear window in the warehouse of the Goddard Grocer Co., 101 William St., late last night, and made off with 150 cartons of cigarettes, valued at $225; this is the eighth time the wholesale firm's building has been burglarized.

100 years ago: June 9, 1905

The Normal School has made great preparations for the expected increase in the number of students next fall, engaging six additional teachers and hiring four new teachers who will replace a like number leaving after the summer school.

Edward Hunze, a carpenter working on the new building for the Glenn Mercantile Co., on Main Street, is injured when a heavy derrick falls; in jumping from the derrick, Hunze sprains his right leg.
