Malden, Mo. -- Southeast Missouri State University employees will receive 4 to 5 percent pay raises for 1994 fiscal year as part of $52.41 million operating budget approved yesterday by Board of Regents; later, in closed session, regents awarded university president Kala Stroup with $8,800 pay hike, raising her salary to $118,000 for coming fiscal year.
Voters within Gordonville Fire District overwhelmingly approved plan Tuesday that will create tax-supported fire-protection district; vote establishing Gordonville Fire Protection District was 342 to 76.

Perryville, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau man was killed yesterday when his Jim Wilson Co. delivery truck collided with Frisco Lines train at railroad crossing on Route C about 2 1/2 miles north of Route P in eastern Perry County; Larry D. Nussbaum, 30, was pronounced dead at scene.
Additional 55 acres of land near Oak Ridge has been purchased by Missouri Department of Conservation; that brings total number of acres purchased statewide since last October to "30,000 acres plus," according to Allen Brohn, assistant director in charge of land acquisition for department; land was purchased "as an addition to the 583 acre Maintz Wildlife Preserve located approximately 3 miles west of Oak Ridge."

In decision destined to have far-reaching effect all over Missouri, state Supreme Court Monday held that children attending Catholic school at Benton couldn't be transported in buses operated by public school district at Commerce; court held public funds couldn't be used in paying for transportation of parochial school pupils, sustaining contention that doing so would violate state constitution.
Equaling high point of yesterday, temperature at 1 p.m. reaches 96 degrees and evidently is bound for new high record for year; rain that fell in copious amounts in northern part of Missouri misses Cape Girardeau district.
75 years ago: June 9, 1928
Heavy rain and electrical storm which swept over Cape Girardeau and district shortly before midnight last night caused extensive damage over wide area; roads throughout district were flooded, crops in creek and river bottoms were virtually ruined by floodwater, while in many instances traffic was held up for several hours while water subsided.
Filing of candidates for offices in Cape Girardeau County closed yesterday, with Democrats bring forth only last-minute developments of consequence; four Democrats filed for nomination for sheriff late in day: Cooper E. Lape, Nat M. Snider, Robert Reed and A.D. Parker; Republican nominees for that office are Albert Illers, J.W. Miller, W.R. Mayhew, W.C. Kelpe, L.C. Rau and F.J. Tacke.
