For Emil "Jim" Meyer, price of progress is paved with sadness; construction of Lexington Street is taking part of his family farm and brick house at 2010 Perryville Road in which he has lived for most of his life; from his porch, 79-year-old Meyer can see Lexington being built just to west of Perryville Road, inching ever closer to his home.

New city attorney, Robert C. Fick, has in mind several ordinances to control operation of massage parlors, in addition to zoning ordinance that is now in works to restrict locations of massage parlors and similar businesses; Fick says he hopes to convince city manager and council of need for ordinances restricting parlors.
Construction is scheduled to begin July 1 or few days thereafter on new Del-Farms supermarket building at South Sprigg and Merriwether; plans for store are complete and will be submitted within a week to contractors for bidding; new store will occupy north part of block between Merriwether and William, just north of present store location.
50 years ago: June 9, 1952
Gary Austin, 8, was biggest man at Arena Park yesterday as he scored highest honors in Plymouth-Optimist Club annual model airplane contest; as reward for scoring four firsts in freshman division, he will be given expense-paid trip from Cape Girardeau County Plymouth dealers to national model contest in Detroit, August 20 to 25; Austin is son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Austin of Cape Girardeau.
Drivers of delivery trucks and taxicabs regain their double parking privileges, but Police Commissioner Philip H. Steck warns that police department won't tolerate abuses; city council last week ordered police to cite all drivers who double parked or parked in metered stall without paying.
75 years ago: June 9, 1927
Recording only 2-inch rise in past 24 hours, Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau is nearing its crest and, with continuation of favorable weather, gradual fall is expected within next few days; stage this morning is 35.6 feet.
Increase of five cents in city tax rate for this year, bringing levy to 72 cents on $100 assessed valuation, is voted by city council in fixing budget for fiscal year, beginning June 30; new levy includes three-cent tax for operation and maintenance of Municipal Band; additional two cents for support of public library and two cents more for general revenue fund.
