1989

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Ron Mix has been named publisher of the North Scott County News newspaper and has also acquired an interest in North Scott Publishing, Inc..

GALE, Ill. -- Removal of more than one million gallons of contaminated oil and water at the old Ilada energy reclamation site near here is expected to begin next month; a plan has been formulated to remove and dispose of the tainted oil and water, which is stored in several World War II-era tanks.

1964

Plans for the major overhaul of North Main Street, estimated to cost $55,000, are ordered from the city engineer by the City Council; the city expects to rebuilt with concrete about a two-block section of the street, to widen it adjacent to the International Shoe Co. plant, and to remove or reduce an offset at the south end of the factory building.

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education approves a budget of $2,322,271.40, a figure nearly $100,000 more than the anticipated income.

1939

A proposal to transport high school pupils in the Fruitland district to the high school at Jackson next school term is being studied by the board of directors of both school systems; Fruitland, up to this time, has maintained its own first-class, four-year high school.

Three Cape Girardeau youths, who are on an automobile tour, have sent word home that they were recently in Charleston, West Virginia, and are headed to Washington, D.C.; the youths are Gordon Neumeyer, John Leming and Harry Siemers.

1914

Mrs. John Kochtitzky of Cape Girardeau, state chairman of the Daughters of the American Revolution's old tracts committee, is asking that anyone knowing anything about the location of the original Kings Highway, or any historical incidents connected with that road, contact her; the D.A.R. hopes to locate and mark the old highway from New Madrid, Missouri, to St. Louis.

Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Wormack of Tyler, Texas, who have been spending a few weeks here with Cora Kain, leave for a short visit with Mrs. Wormack's relatives at Sikeston, Missouri, before returning home.
