The mainline Burlington Northern Railroad track between St. Louis and Memphis is expected to be reopened today following a 23-car derailment yesterday six miles north of Cape Girardeau; no one was injured and no loss of hazardous materials was involved.

Former Gov. Warren E. Hearnes of Charleston, Mo., is the featured speaker at graduation exercises for five Japanese businessmen who have spent the past 10 months studying English, American culture and business practices through the International Business Institute at Southeast Missouri State University.

1963

Swimmers, divers, splashers and waders have been over 50 percent more numerous at the Cape Girardeau municipal swimming pool during its first week of operation than during the first week last year; a lot of that may be credited to the early June heat wave.

Jackson residents who are opposed to the construction of a cob house at the Farm Bureau Service store file complaints with city charging violation of the building permit ordinance and the zoning ordinance; they charge the partially built structure was begun without a permit in a residential zone; the growing dispute centers around a cob house being erected to catch shucks and cobs from a corn shelling operation.

1938

The brewery at Old Appleton, Mo., has been closed, and its equipment will be moved to Marionville, Mo., where a new plant has been erected; 50 men and women have been employed in the brewery, with the payroll running around $40,000 per year; since the repeal of prohibition, the brewery has been operated by B.H. McGovern of St. Louis.

Maj. Giboney Houck has started rebuilding a structure at 508 Independence St., which was damaged by fire last September; it is said that O.E. Eggimann will probably open a feed and seed establishment there when the building is finished; until recently, Eggimann was the manager of the Cape Egg and Feed Co. here.

1913

No worship services are held at Trinity Lutheran Church, as the congregation gathers at the fairgrounds for its annual mission festival; speaking in the morning is the Rev. R. Winkler of New Wells; the afternoon sermon is preached by the Rev. W.C. Borchers of Friedheim, Mo.; guests attend from the congregations at Illmo, Hanover, Egypt Mills, Jackson, Gordonville, and Zion.

The big tabernacle is filled in the evening to hear evangelist Lincoln McConnell; it's his third talk of the day, and it includes a warning not to listen to the lies "Old Splitfoot" tells about the campaign.
