25 years ago: June 8, 1985

Central High School held its commencement last night at the school gymnasium with U.S. District Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh as keynote speaker.

The old Broadway Theater and the building adjacent to its east side have been acquired by Vineyard Christian Fellowship, an interdenominational congregation, from Kerasotes Missouri Theaters Inc.; the theater closed in 1984.

50 years ago: June 8, 1960

Permission has been granted by the county court to C.W. Bauerle and Carl Penzel to make a survey of a north slope hillside at the County Home; while the slope is too steep for agricultural purposes, the men believe it might lend itself to plantings of broad-leafed evergreen plants.

Over 500 people are on hand to hear the Municipal Band concert in the evening at the band shell in Capaha Park; special guests are the high school students who are attending band camp at State College this week.

75 years ago: June 8, 1935

At a stage of 35.3 feet in the morning, the Mississippi River presents a flood threat to Cape Girardeau's waterfront; it is believed the remaining section of land east of the Frisco Railroad tracks in the south part of town will be inundated by nightfall; six city truck and as many others employed by relief agencies are helping to move stranded families out to higher areas.

Buddy Cambron, catcher for the 75 Million Club in the Municipal League, who was injured Monday when he slid into third base and pulled a tendon in one leg, is able to get around on crutches.

100 years ago: June 8, 1910

Graduation exercises were held yesterday morning at St. Vincent's Young Ladies Academy, closing out 71 years of learning; among those receiving the laurel was Genevieve Hoch, one of Cape Girardeau's fair daughters and the third generation of the same family to complete her schooling at St. Vincent's.

An institute for black teachers of this district is being conducted at the Lincoln School in Cape Girardeau; it will continue for two weeks, under the guidance of John S. Cobb, principal at Lincoln.
