25 years ago: June 8, 1980

Tim Smith, of Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey, is serving a 12-week internship at First Presbyterian Church; much of his internship will be concentrated on the duties of an associate pastor, since the Rev. Sam Peters, associate pastor of First Presbyterian, will be in Europe with his family for a month this summer.

The Rev. Dennis Foust has assumed the duties of interim pastor at First General Baptist Church of Cape Girardeau.

50 years ago: June 8, 1955

Cape Girardeau building records, which seem to be broken every few months, again took a beating in May, when the largest number of residential permits in history was written and the total for all construction for the month reached the fourth highest single-month amount on record; the dollar amount of permits was $557,000 for 31 houses.

The Jackson City Council pushes plans to remodel the old city fire department building; Elfrink Construction Co. submitted a bid of $2,780 to remodel the building into an office for the superintendent of the Municipal Light and Power Plant, Clarence N. Crites; the bid was accepted.

75 years ago: June 8, 1930

A communion service is held at 6:30 a.m. at Maple Avenue Methodist Church in celebration of Pentecost; reception of members and the regular morning service follow at 11; at the evening hour, Russell Fowler of the Young People's Organization of Centenary is in charge and delivers the sermon.

John Schmitz, 18, of Oriole, is drowned near that place in Indian Creek, while he and two companions -- Charles Schmitz, his brother, and Melvin Heise -- are bathing in a deep hole of water.

100 years ago: June 8, 1905

August Lehne, a farmer residing near Egypt Mills, is in Cape Girardeau and reports that the farmers are leaving the cornfields and getting ready to cut wheat; he estimates the crop at about half a yield.

Through the resignation of Justice of the Peace Robert Amos of Hubble Township, a vacancy occurred which has just been filled; William Meisenheimer has received the position and began his duties Monday.
