Thousands of youngsters will take part in summer camps at Southeast Missouri State University this year; camps involve everything from chemistry for kids to rock climbing, and basketball to music; music, cheerleading and athletic camps annually are big attractions, say university personnel; each of camps lasts week at most.
Volunteers hit streets of downtown Cape Girardeau yesterday in preparation for this weekend's Riverfest celebration; workers cleaned streets and sidewalks, cut weeds and picked up trash along riverfront; tens of thousands of people are expected to attend 14th annual Riverfest, set for Friday and Saturday.

Perryville - Fire which claimed life of 9-year-old Perryville boy apparently was caused by small gas heater in bedroom where he and his 7-year-old sister were sleeping; body of Stacy Procter, son of Mrs. Norma Jean Procter, was found by firemen near bedroom where two older brothers were sleeping; victim's brothers and sister managed to escape.
McClure, Ill. - Residents of McClure are being asked to conserve water because of shortage that apparently is due to some malfunction in system; Frank Marchildon, member of water board for town, says if voluntary conservation doesn't work, system may be shut down entirely for few hours a day to enforce cut in water usage; McClure is supplied by a well.
50 years ago: June 8, 1952
Two new church buildings in Cape Girardeau are well on their way to completion, two other congregations are in process of launching fund-raising campaigns to finance building of new churches and one other parish has approved plans for construction of education buildings; buildings under construction are Red Star Baptist Church and Church of Christ; First Christian Church and Bible Baptist Church are engaged in fund-raising campaigns.
The Rev. Robert C. Bingenheimer of Cape Girardeau has been appointed pastor of Methodist Church of Illmo; Bingenheimer received his bachelor of divinity degree from Southern Methodist University on Tuesday.
75 years ago: June 8, 1927
Mississippi River, on its latest rampage, nears its predicted crest of 36 feet at Cape Girardeau; river reaches 35.4 feet in morning, rise of nearly five inches in past 36 hours; water covers portions of south section of Water Street; Frisco railroad tracks on Water Street are submerged, and at intersection of Water and Independence, water is 18 inches deep.
Jackson - J.M. Slagle, merchant and banker of Whitewater, has been appointed special deputy commissioner to liquidate affairs of closed Delta District Bank at Delta; Slagle is head of Whitewater Mercantile Co., and is widely known throughout county.
