25 years ago: June 7, 1984

The Cape Girardeau and Scott County courts will be issuing $50,000 interest-free notes to the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority as part of an agreement among the three bodies over the construction of a new port road; the paved road will replace a winding, steep gravel drive now being used at the port site near Scott City.

Allen Waste Management, the largest private solid waste disposal firm in Cape Girardeau, announces plans to construct a waste transfer station in the Cape Girardeau area.

50 years ago: June 7, 1959

The Rev. Robert H. McPherson, new pastor of Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church, preaches his first sermon there in the morning; McPherson was recently released from Army service, having serviced as a battle group chaplain for 13 months in Korea.

In an annual custom at St. Mary's Cathedral, the vehicles of church members are blessed after the 10:45 a.m. Mass.

75 years ago: June 7, 1934

William H. Kiehne of Cape Girardeau goes to Doniphan, Mo., where he will spend the rest of the week fishing; he is accompanied by J.O. Goggin of St. Louis, and they will be joined later by Ralph Leidigh of Cape Girardeau; Kiehne is manager of the The Missourian Printing and Stationery Co., and Leidigh is a salesman for the company; Goggin is an engraving salesman.

The six wooden porches on the rear of the Bellevue Apartments, 419 Bellevue St., are being torn away and replaced with concrete porches.

100 years ago: June 7, 1909

The new firefighting apparatus is put into service early this morning when it is called to the home of Mrs. Ruehmann on North Street, near Middle Street; the team of grays responds nicely to the signal and makes the run in excellent style, reaching the scene of the fire, some six blocks away, 10 minutes after the alarm sounds; damage to the house is slight.

The Coney Island refreshment emporium, which has succeeded the Boston shoe shining parlor in the building just west of The Republican offices, did immense business yesterday and had to close early because of a lack of supplies.
