25 years ago: June 4, 1987

Three of five park fee measures were approved by Cape Girardeau voters Tuesday in an election marked by confusion over vote totals in which the outcome changed three times; 17 hours after the initial tabulation of votes, the final outcome was announced; measures to increase golf course and Arena Building usage fees and to establish recreation program fees were approved.

Fire in a restroom at Central High School forces evacuation of the building on this, the final day of classes; damage is confined to the men's restroom on the bottom floor near the cafeteria, in the north part of the building.

50 years ago: June 4, 1962

By virtue of city council action, children will pay a nickel more this summer to use the municipal swimming pool; the price change will raise the child's admission from 20 to 25 cents; adults will continue to pay 50 cents.

A new swimming pool, 20-by-40 feet and from 2 1/2 to 6 1/2 feet in depth, has been put into operation at the Town House Motel on U.S. 61.

75 years ago: June 4, 1937

More than 1,000 people gather at Old Appleton to celebrate the formal opening of Highway 25, paving of which has been completed between Old Appleton and Jackson; a program of speeches and music from the bands of Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Perryville, Mo., Jackson and Uniontown, Mo., entertains the crowd.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Treasure-hunting fever is gripping the area; two men have made arrangements with the board of trustees of the Friedenberg Lutheran Church here to explore the cemetery next to the church; the men will be allowed to dig for buried Civil War treasure in the cemetery's alleyways and unoccupied sections; they won't dig up any graves.

100 years ago: June 4, 1912

Rodney G. Whitelaw is back from the international automobile races held at Indianapolis; he witnessed the great 500-mile race there on Memorial Day, along with 80,000 other people.

Sam Randol has sold his ice and transfer business to the Black Diamond and Blue Ribbon companies, who will take charge at once.
