The marble steps in front of Academic Hall have been removed while the supports for them are rebuilt; about 100 marble stones, averaging 700 pounds each, will be cleaned and waterproofed; Tom's Tuckpointing Co. of Corning, Arkansas, is doing the work.

Dale Meier, who racked up an impressive record in his senior year this season with the State College Indians, has signed a bonus contract with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball organization; the young pitcher drew much attention this spring as he pitched a no-hitter against Harris Teachers College.

The coveted Lou Muegge Award is presented to Mike Price at Central High School during its annual awards day program.

1939

Without a home of its own, the municipal government of Cape Girardeau is facing the need more and more of providing adequate facilities for its expanding needs; jammed in with the county in ancient Common Pleas Courthouse, office space is at a premium; the police and fire departments are housed together in one building, which cannot adequately serve either.

Apparently it will be late in the summer before construction work is started on a sector of three miles or more of the farm-to-market Route Z, west of Gordonville; the job is not included in the June 9 State Highway Department contract letting.

1914

Stillwell R. Harcourt, assistant manager of the piano section of the Famous and Barr store in St. Louis, has opened a piano store on Main Street; for 30 days he will conduct a special sale on pianos and player pianos.

C.H. Dutcher, president of the Normal School from 1876 to 1880, is in town for the meeting of the Alumni Association; he praises Cape Girardeau's progressiveness, saying, "One sees new buildings, new streets, new sidewalks and fine improvements on every hand. The buildings of the Normal School are magnificent."
