25 years ago: June 3, 1983

Charles N. Harris, a Cape Girardeau businessman whose interests ranged from automotive firms to plastics, dies at a local hospital at age 63; Harris was associated with his father in Harris Motor Co. from 1938 to 1972 and in Harris Truck and Trailer; he was one of the founders of Atlas Plastics and was associated with many other businesses.

Thieves took an estimated $1,300, most of it from a safe, during a burglary at the Elks Lodge in Cape Girardeau yesterday; it is the second break-in at a fraternal organization lodge here this week.

50 years ago: June 3, 1958

The Frisco Railroad, seeking to justify its application to withdraw its night passenger service through Cape Girardeau, declares in testimony before the Missouri Public Service Commission at the Common Pleas Courthouse that the service "is not necessary to the public convenience, as demonstrated by its lack of patronage."

Petitions asking that a proposal to establish branch banking in Missouri be placed on the ballot at the November election are being circulated in Cape Girardeau.

75 years ago: June 3, 1933

Within a month federal conservation corps workers will be laboring on Missouri projects, including five state parks where roads, fire lines, fire towers and water supply lines will be constructed; workers will clear lateral drainage ditches in the Southeast Missouri.

Prof. and Mrs. A.C. Magill and their eight children will go to Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday, where he will receive a doctor's degree from George Peabody College; he is head of the science department at the Teachers College.

100 years ago: June 3, 1908

L.T. Lindsay is moving his stock of goods and his family into the Milde property at Jackson, lately known as the Fray Hotel.

C.D. Tresenriter, editor of the Progress newspaper in Cape Girardeau, has filed as a Democratic candidate for the lower branch of the Missouri Legislature; his candidacy is contingent upon the results of the Democratic primary in August, where he will run against Lafayette Caruthers, lawyer, land owner and capitalist of Cape Girardeau.
