CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Ernie Lawson was named new superintendent of Chaffee schools at special executive session last night; his appointment followed last week's unexpected resignation by Wayne Pressley, superintendent here past three years.

For first time in almost 44 years, steam-powered passenger train stops at Cape Girardeau; former St. Louis-San Francisco (Frisco) Railroad's No. 1522 locomotive stops en route from Memphis to St. Louis Union Station.

25 years ago: June 29, 1979

One hundred and twenty city employees, firefighters and public works personnel walk from Cape Girardeau to Jackson to protest "bad faith in negotiating" on part of city; in other developments, city manager W.G. Lawley says, contingent on city council approval, he well accept firefighters' offer to return to work and agrees to federal mediation.

President of board of regents of Southeast Missouri State University, Kenneth Dement, confirms that Dr. Robert E. Leestamper will leave campus in about two weeks.

50 years ago: June 29, 1954

Segregation from seventh grade through high school in both Cape Girardeau and Jackson schools was abolished last night in joint action of boards of education of two school system; step was further implemented by Cape Girardeau board through resolution opening both Junior High School and Central High School to blacks.

Charles R. Young, all-state high school player in Illinois and for four years defensive end for University of Arkansas, has been appointed State College's first full-time assistant football coach.

75 years ago: June 29, 1929

Assurance that paving of West Broadway extension to Highway 61, just west of city limits, with concrete 30 feet wide, is expressed by officials of Rouse Construction Co., contractors for paving the highway; paving of extension should begin in about a week.

Final action on plans for constructing first unit of new Teachers College stadium will be taken in a few weeks, following submission of costs of project by Jameson and Sperl of St. Louis, architect for college; in meantime, construction work on Houck Field is progressing rapidly under direction of V.A. Chapman, superintendent of buildings and grounds for college.
